Large studies identify new risk genes for ulcerative colitis and IBD
By Catharine Paddock
A large study conducted by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute at Hinxton, has described finding a genetic link between a rare variant of a gene called ADCY7 that doubles the risk of developing ulcerative colitis. Research suggests a potential new drug targeted specifically at this gene could be a result of this finding. Another study found a further 25 new genetic links to increased IBD risk, which have already been showing promising results in managing IBD. Researchers plan to sequence the genomes of 25,000 patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, to discover more about the disease.
